SignageStudio / Javascript horizontal ticker extremely slow
« on: September 11, 2013, 10:38:28 AM »
I tried the RSS new horizontal ticker but when I increased the font size, the ticker items actually overlapped and became unreadable.

Since that didn't work, I tried a swf ticker I downloaded from the web. That was too slow and since I didn't know how to change the timing, I finally decided to write a ticker in Javascript/HTML5 using the canvas component. It runs great in a local browser but when I include it as in my campaign presentation as an HTML component it's 5 or 6 times slower, literally creeping across the screen.

How can I get the HTML component to play at the same speed as it does in the browser. Is this just an Adobe AIR problem? I hope there is some way to get a fast, good looking horizontal scrolling ticker in Mediasignage.

Awesome. Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!

Andrew, thanks for the reply. Yes, I've been able to get it working that way, which utilizes fields. I was just hoping to get at the text in an element tag instead, i.e. with this tag:

<foo field1="something">Text I care about</foo>

I want to access the "Text I care about" vs. the "something".

The more I think about it, there just might not be a way for MediaSignage to access this. I hope I'm wrong though because this XML file I'm working with is generated by a piece of software and I don't want to have to re-write it if possible.

I watched the XML video but I was wondering how to get at the data inside an element tag's opening and closing brackets vs. the data in a field tag. Here's what I mean. If this were my file:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding='UTF-8'?>

<arg1>I'm not using this</arg1>
<arg2>It will be read in a different component</arg2>

<row id="1">
<column1>This is the data I care about</column1>
<column2>Blah Blah Blah</column2>
<column3>Blah Blah Blah</column3>

<row id="2">
<column1>Blah Blah Blah</column1>
<column2>Blah Blah Blah</column2>
<column3>Blah Blah Blah</column3>

How would I get at all of the column data (all the "Blah Blah Blah" statements)? Is there even a way to get at something that isn't a field?

General discussion on the mediaSERVER / XML Component for server

Will there be an XML Component for the Server edition? I noticed that one exists for the Enterprise, but not for the free media cloud. I sure hope there is one!

Actually, it looks like just re-formatting the XML to be RSS compatible would be the least painful of the two options.  I think I'll give that a try.

Thanks, those examples look promising.  On the one where it showed the xml for the file the swf was using though, I was wondering if you edit the xml directly, will it reflect the changes in SignagePlayer each time it reloads the timeline (every minute or whatever it's set to)?  It seems like it would but that wasn't mentioned in the video and I'm unfamiliar with how swf files work.  The video only showed how to edit the entries with SignageStudio and we'd like for our users to be able to just edit the (external/stand-alone) text file directly and load it from a URL into the swf

SignageStudio / Reading from a text file/XML?
« on: November 29, 2010, 08:46:03 AM »
I was wondering if it's possible to read data from a text file into a signageplayer, specifically an xml file.  I have the file available as a URL and want to just map it into various labels/boxes on a screen.  The only thing I see under components that looks like it might do this is Catalog Item but I don't know how that works or if that's even the way to go.  Is this even possible with this software?

Yeah, the problem is that we are on a very restrictive network.  We are going to need to get the media server package to make things work.  But the problem we are running into is that we are sort of in a catch-22.  Before we invest in the server, we want to make sure that the players run great on all of our mac minis.  But we haven't been able to do that.  So I can't really turn off the nightly reboot until I have the server in place if I need to do it through SignageStudio.

But ultimately, the nightly reboot is probably a good idea for memory anyway so I wish there was a way to make it work.  We installed Windows 7 on one of the mac minis and it's never had a problem but because of network requirements, we need to run Mac OS so I really need to find a solution to these reboot problems.

I installed the latest build (2.2.1085) and even ran all the install scripts again but the same thing happened.  I set the time to just before midnight and at 12:00:04, the KillAll Reboot message shows up.  This time though, it just froze and didn't actually reboot.  I waited almost 3 minutes and then just killed the app.

Then I noticed the latest version of AIR wasn't installed so I updated that to 2.5.x and tried the whole thing.  This time, I noticed that when the first launches, it shows that SignageController is "Polling Every 60 Seconds" (yellow text).  So maybe the Controller isn't running right now?

Where/how do you disable the "Nightly" reboot condition you talked about?

Was this issue ever resolved.  We are using Mac Minis (3,1) and experiencing the exact same issue.  The signagecontroller reboots the mini's at just after mid night every day but the signageplayer never restarts.  The console shows clearly that it is signagecontroller forcing the restarts but I've been on with tech support and even called and the issue has never been resolved.
