SignageStudio / Re: Facebook Integration and XML
« on: October 17, 2012, 06:49:19 AM »

Thanks so much for this. Definitely going to look into implementing it. I agree with you that the current FB component is useless. The two main things that businesses want to display, it lacks: statuses and likes.

SignageStudio / Facebook Integration and XML

Does anyone have any insight/information into developing Facebook implementation with the XML component? Social Media is definitely the way forward and many of our clients want to see Facebook statuses and likes on their screens. I have been researching a bit and it seems Facebook is quite difficult to pull information from; possible, but not easy. The access token element definitely complicates matters.

I'm not even sure the XML component is the way to go with this. I've found articles that talk about using PHP code. I'm no programmer, and I don't even know if there's a way to currently make use of such within Studio. I would consider outsourcing this kind of project an experienced programmer, but I think I need to wait for the SDK to become available.

Would be interested to hear anyone else's ideas/thoughts/projects.

And of course, we're still waiting very patiently for that XML Component bug to be fixed.

Report bugs and errors / Cannot Rename in Scene Editor
« on: October 01, 2012, 12:02:37 PM »
Not sure if this is a bug or something that was just left out.

In 3.0 I was able to rename resources, weather items etc. under the outline tab that I was using in a scene. In 4.0 I am unable to do this.

Please can you reinstate this feature if it is missing, as it is difficult to stay organized without it when building scenes. If the feature is still there, please enlighten me.

Report bugs and errors / Re: Suspected H264 codec Bug ANYONE ELSE?

@ RK

I'm using CS5, but I don't think there's much change from CS6. Either you're using a pirated or trial version of CS6 which might not have full render capabilities, or you're just missing something.

Go to 'Composition' > 'Add to Render Queue'
In your render queue, go to 'Output Module'
You should see a dropdown list of all the different formats you can render in. Select FLV.
Go to 'Format Options' and select the H264 codec.

I have managed to achieve smooth HD playback back on 2.0 and 3.0. I rendered from After Effects as a Quicktime format using the H264 codec. However, with 4.0 I cannot get any MOV H264 HD clips to play without some kind of problem (blackouts, stuttering, repeats).

I don't quite classify FLV as true HD (because there is a noticeable decrease in quality from MOV), but using landscape orientated FLVs in 4.0, I don't have any problems. My workflow is to export directly from After Effects as FLV using the H264 codec. More recently, I have begun rendering uncompressed from After Effects and then encoding to FLV with H264 codec from either Premier or Quicktime Pro. All methods give me smooth playback. What software are you using?

In terms of hardware, I use the MediaBOX 200 as my main player, and playback is smooth. I have noticed that the MediaBOX 100 struggles with some FLV content, though. I have other custom built high end players that also playback smoothly.

I've noticed the same playback issues between 3.0 and 4.0.

Let's hope we get some fixes soon. After all, content is king, right? If we can't play our content, what's the point?

Criley, changing the file extension does not do anything. The files play with same problems.

Admins, you have emailed me stating that the problem is likely a result of Adobe Air 3.4 bugs. Please then explain to me why the videos playback in Studio without problems? Studio is also running on Adobe Air 3.4, right? And these issues occur on previous versions of Air in any case.

I am not expecting this to be fixed right this moment. I just would like some acknowledgement that there is a problem and that you're looking into it. I would like to know if you experience the same results with H264 codecs as I do. Am I seriously the only person having this issue?

This issue was touched on in a previous posting, but I am making a new thread because I want as many people possible to read this and give their input.

I believe MOV with H.264 codec is the best quality format for signage content. Its file size is economical and its quality is far superior to FLV. Player 3.0 handled MOV fine for the most part. Playback was smooth and the image was crisp and clear. However, around January of this year, I started having issues with content dropping to black. By 'black' I mean just a blank screen when content should have been playing. Some files would black out or begin midway through their duration, while others would not play at all. Back then, the admins advised I stick to FLV, which I began doing.

However, I have several portrait screens which have remained a problem because switching them to an FLV format will not work. For those who don't know, FLV cannot have a height resolution greater than 1080, which means that HD resolution can never be achieved for FLVs in portrait mode.

I have been doing hundreds of tests with H264 codecs and multiple versions of 4.0 (from 4.0.10 to 4.0.77). I now constantly have problems with these MOV files rendered with an H264 codec. The admins deny that there are any bugs, but I challenge them/you to recreate my scenarios and see if you encounter the same problems.

  • I use After Effects for all content creation. A QuickTime file rendered in the H264 codec directly from After Effects produces the following result: file blacks out midway through duration, or begins from black midway through duration.
  • Another method is to export uncompressed (no codec) from After Effects, and then render in the H264 codec through either Premier or Quicktime Pro or other encoders. Renders result in the following: video holds motion/playback for about a second into duration and then continues playing. The hold occurs a few frames into playback, so one never actually gets to see the beginning of video

Now here's the kicker, these anomalies only occur on PLAYERS when a campaign is running. If you playback the files within Studio under the Resources tab THERE IS NO PROBLEM. Now how can you tell me that is not bug related? I have tried this on various hardware types including the MediaBOX, and the results are all the same. My suspicion is that the internal fade transition between resources on a timeline is causing problems with the MOVs (H264 codec).

I really just want to find a solution to this problem, and I would really like to know if others get the same results. Like I said, the problems were not always guaranteed in 3.0, but they occur every time within 4.0, which again adds fire to my bug theory.

In conjunction with this post, I am emailing a video to mstech@mediasignage to showcase the problems.

Some more bugs and issues since 4.0.73 (and before)

  • Frequent and random crashes of the Signage Studio
  • Sometimes I randomly lose the ability to alter file duration by dragging the handles. Duration can then only be altered changing the numerical value in the properties. The ability to move a file along the timeline with the cursor also goes. Studio must be restarted to resolve.
  • I had problems in the past with some MOV files dropping to black either for their full file duration or around half way through. I updated one of my screens to 4.0 and since then 70% of the content shows just black. The content is all MOV files. I know you guys always say to stick with FLV, which I do for the most part, however, this is a massive portrait display and if you didn't already know, FLV has a height restriction of 1080. So to use FLVs at 608w x 1080h on a 1080w x 1920h 85" commercial grade screen sucks because the pixelation is extremely evident. Full HD portrait MOVs would be nice, but the reliability of MOVs with your software is poor, and I can't keep risking black screens. It's just too unprofessional. Can you guys consider looking into these MOV bugs? Regardless of the FLV height restriction, the quality of FLV just does not compare to MOV, no matter how you render it. Being able to offer HD content is incredibly important in my opinion.
  • M4Vs appear to be completely incompatible even though software claims to support it. They upload as a resource into Studio, but never load to playback.
  • My white label splash screen is still not working. Not even sure whether it is uploading. I am using a swf. Still getting generic '..presentation will resume shortly...'

Thanks for your help in advance. I do want to see this software improve, even though it's already very innovative and groundbreaking.

SignageStudio / Re: Facebook Comp

I'm not interested in enhancements of the FB comp. I just want to know whether it's secure to use. Do the user names and passwords get stored on the cloud?

SignageStudio / Facebook Comp
« on: July 13, 2012, 10:34:40 AM »
I know 4.0 has not made final release yet, but my question relates to something that I'm sure is not going to change.

In order to make use of the FB comp, FB login details are required. I have some users/clients who are concerned about the safety of their FB passwords. Any risks I should be aware of? Are their FB details stored on your cloud server?

Please let me know.

So I have installed Signage Player 4.0 to see if that would help at all. It has not. This mediabox seems to have become virtually incompatible with all MOV files. Of 30 MOVs that I uploaded, it only plays two of them, even though it caches them all.

I create and render all my content from Adobe After Effects using an H264 Quicktime codec. I have been doing this for 10 months without any problems. Using MOV on other Mediaboxes running both 3.0 and 4.0 is not a problem. It's just this one player, and the problem seemed to worsen around the time I upgraded from AIR 2.5 to 3.3. I tried downgrading to 3.2, but it didn't change anything.

I wonder if the jump from AIR 2.5 to 3.3 has caused something to happen that creates problems with MOV. Support for all other file formats seems to be fine, including FLV. I know you guys always recommend using FLV as the preferred video format, however, MOV has been a stable option for me, and continues to be on all other players. If this is a bug related to AIR, I'm sure it's not of much concern to you guys, but it would be interesting to recreate the scenario to see if it happens again. Maybe I'll find some time to do it. Things like this frustrate me and an explanation and clarification on the problem would be welcome. But it's not expected.

The only solution I have now is to re-render my content for this player to FLV. It's time-consuming, but it has to be done.

I have been using the Media Signage MediaBox as my preferred choice of player for almost a year now. I have 10 Media Boxes currently in deployment at various locations.

In the past month, I noticed that some of my screens have been showing blank when they should be playing a video. I am familiar with the player doing this when caching, however, this is occurring on fully cached players that have been running without problem for several months. The problem does not seem to be coming from the campaign, as when I run the same campaign across several different players, some show all the content, while some show a blank screen only for certain videos. The blank screen shows for the duration of the specific video. I tried manually clearing the player cache and re-uploading the campaign to the player, but the result was the same. The only fix involved deleting the resource from the Studio, re-uploading it to the MediaCloud, and replacing it on the campaign timeline.

This problem has recently gotten worse. The first MediaBox that I purchased about year ago, has been running fully cached with no problems since I got it. In the past week, it has begun to show a blank screen for 80% of the video content. Components like ticker and weather, and static resources (png, jpg) all still play fine consistently. However, the videos do not. To keep deleting and re-uploading resources is not a time-efficient solution. Surely there is an explanation to this behavior?

My videos are rendered as *.mov in H264. The file sizes range from 100MB to 400MB. I know that the recommended format is FLV, however, the loss of image quality is too great. And MOV has been smooth, sharp, and reliable up until now.

I have been on Live Support and I was told that the issue was likely an internet connection problem. I have run the players on super fast connections, both wired and wireless, and there is no difference. Besides, we are dealing with fully cached players, so internet connection should not be an issue here.

My speculative guess is that the solid state drives in the MediaBox do not have a very long lifespan, and they are losing the ability to hold large files (this is a known issue with SSDs). This seems plausible due to increased problems on older players. I cannot think of what else this might be. The problem seems to be clearly related to the MediaBox hardware.

A reliable player is of the utmost importance to any signage setup. If anyone else has been experiencing these problems, please post. Any information would be grateful.

Much Thanks,

General discussion on the mediaCLOUD / Commercial Use and Legal Use
« on: April 16, 2012, 12:31:31 PM »
I have recently been made aware of some legal aspects with regards to my small digital signage business. The MediaSignage software offers some pre-programmed RSS feeds within it. When investigating the Terms of Use where many of these feeds originate from, they are stipulated as being for personal and non-commercial use only. Yet, as a re-seller, I am obviously using this software for commercial purposes, and I market both the Media RSS and RSS as selling points. I have clients with screens running in public venues where these RSS feeds are used. Is this a violation of the law? And if so, who is liable? The client, re-seller, or MediaSignage?

I have not come across any other posts regarding these legalities. Would be interesting to hear from others with any experience with this. I know there are still a lot of gray areas when it comes to digital media and copyright, and there is also a lot of hearsay about what is legal and illegal. Some facts would be nice, but I can't afford a lawyer to find out. As far as I'm concerned, I'm keeping my RSS feeds up until I know for certain.

Report bugs and errors / Campaign Suddenly Distorted on Player
« on: February 16, 2012, 02:06:54 PM »
I have been running a campaign on our in-office test screen for the past 2 weeks. It has been playing perfectly. Yesterday, a new mediabox200 I ordered from you guys arrived. I set it up and switched the campaign to the new player. It was playing fine, however, today, all of a sudden, the displayed content distorted into the bottom 1/5th of the screen.

I reset the player from the studio, I reset the player hardware, I plugged the player hardware into another monitor. The problem persists.

I have now managed to isolate the problem to being a campaign issue. When I create a new campaign and send it to the player, there is no problem. However, when I duplicate the problematic campaign, it also is distorted. When I reset windows or bring up the controller, the display is fine. Only the campaign playback is distorting.

This problem occurred completely randomly. I am also wondering whether the new player could have anything to do with it? :o

Has anyone else experienced this?

New features and suggestions / Weather Days like Clock/Date
« on: February 15, 2012, 02:44:16 PM »
It would be nice see to an option for the weather days to customize how they are displayed. If it could be just like the display for the clock (eg. E EE EEE EEEE)that would be very useful. When making an extended forecast, one doesn't always want to display the entire day name. To make the text box smaller simply doesn't work.

I am desperate for the 3.1 release. Please soon.

Keep up the good work.
