As a web developer, I understand that the 1.1 Twitter API requires oAuth (essentially this means that all feed requests now need to be authenticated by a Twitter username/password). It's easy to assume that you could simply use one account to authenticate all feeds however Twitter limit the number of requests per hour.

That given, for MS to authenticate everyones feeds would not be viable. I see that any update that MS are working on would require users to enter a username/password, and I'd also envisage that MS would need to cache tweet feeds in order to ensure that each user's request limits aren't exhausted. Fairly simple (although quite cumbersome) if you're just updating a single Twitter feed on a website, however I fear this is quite chunk of development for a multi-user infrastructure like a digital signage platform. That given, there's a lot of documentation available on the Twitter Developer portal and the API v1 sundown was announced about 12 months ago so developers should have had some time to update their plugins.

Hi ireirenene,

We've also had this issue which I reported to MS Tech Support back in May. From our experience, it mainly appears to happen with video clips that are loaded on frame one of a timeline. In terms of a workaround which seems to 'fix' the issue, we discovered something ourselves – simply offset the video by one second (i.e. start it on frame 2 of the timeline). For some reason this consistently fixed the scaling issue. Wether this gives the ‘stage’ enough time to be aware of each ‘content regions’ dimensions I don’t know. Not the most elegant of solutions but it works!

Yes, we also get the odd flickering of 'old videos' – no real way we've found to fix this, however loading a 'blank' .png file in between videos may help. I think it may be something to do with the player not unloading content when it's finished playing (the timeline/region simply gets overwritten with new timeline content when required). It would be good to get some feedback from MS on both of these issues however.

Hi vitrinedtv, I believe that MediaSignage are reworking their API as of the V4.x release - though speaking with Live Chat I've not been able to establish any timeframe for this. Hopefully though this should open the door for developers to build custom integrations with their own apps etc.

I wait as you do for an announcement/documentation etc. to see what can be achieved with the new API. Should be exciting for devs and Enterprise customers.

Sorry if I'm interpreting this incorrectly Sean, but you're releasing new features geared towards your FREE user base before your paid Enterprise users? I'm really passionate about the new features/developments but this approach to feature release is a bit of a jab in the eye for those paying customers (who I'm sue feel they're contributing capital for developments such as these).

I'd have to agree that the out of date looking 'Signage Player' text that comes up when booting jars with me, too – on a couple of levels.

1. Given the fact that Enterprise customers have a white label solution and the ability to create their own Digital Signage brand (some folk I'd imagine would do a pretty fantastic job creating a brand, stations, content etc.) – this Signage Player text could look a little novice compared to the custom branding that can be displayed when the player is updating.

2. Most importantly – as an Enterprise user and reseller, knowing how easy it is for any potential customer of ours to Google 'signage player' and see the DigitalSignage website at #1 somewhat exposes the underlying technology we're using, and inevitably our margins etc. The very software that we're paying for to help us build a business is somewhat taking away with the same hand.

Let's illustrate a real life scenario: we're doing a technical demo/pitch to a potential client – 10+ people in the room watching excitedly as the player boots up "it's that simple to use" we say. Then all of a sudden "Signage Player" flashes up. Aforementioned 10+ people are heard scribbling or tapping away on their smartphones (most people are tech savvy these days – so they'll Google "Signage Player" after the meeting). Note: Our custom branding only ever appears when we push an update – so our custom branding doesn't necessarily appear at any stage of this pitch. Bottom line: it comes across in the pitch that we're using an off the shelf solution that's we've not even put much effort into customizing. Hardly the best sales pitch for us.

Removing this Signage Player text with a generic 'loading' graphic or our custom branding would get my +1.

Just my opinion, but one I feel may resonate with others.

I'm on  Mac OS, so editing in Web Studio and uploading via Desktop is my only option (web based uploads aren't supported on Mac OS Web Studio).

Sounds like a minor detail, but when syncronising (uploading) files to the cloud, SignageStudio editing is disabled until the upload completes. Some sort of background upload feature would allow a user to continue working on a timeline (or alternative campaigns) whilst the background upload completes. A short video upload may lock out editing for 10-15 minutes – and I can only drink so many cups of coffee in a day :)

Alternatively, FTP access or a standalone web-uploader would be cool. I'm assuming that media items are catalogued in the database when uplaoded, so FTP may pose some technical issues.

p.s. +1 my vote for a more intuitive way of organising of media items (and retaining the current filter/folder whilst navigating between timelines/screen types etc.)

Hi all,

I thought I'd share my initial experiences using and user-testing the new RemoteTouch feature. Generally I see a lot of potential with RemoteTouch. Functionality wise, I found it a breeze to implement and already have a custom HTML page with the JavaScript API plugged in. Phone and screen are talking (yay). Some documentation for the API (as well as any other methods available) would be great.

Note: this isn't a criticism at the RemoteTouch dev team in any way – I understand this feature is still in development and it will continue evolve. Simply – here's a usage scenario I have, and some issues I've faced.

SignageStudio Campaign Setup:
1. My main timeline (i.e the the non RemoteTouch state)
2. Welcome to RemoteTouch timeline (1 minute duration, set to Auto Resume - this is my 'time out' should the customer walk away without exiting their RemoteTouch session on their phone) [Essential IMO]
3. A selection of timelines (for my demo, this is a range of product videos the customer can select from)

Real world usage (with all timelines set to auto resume)
1. Customer scans the QR code and activates our 'welcome screen' – a custom web page loads in their browser with the option to select from a range of videos (each one of these buttons triggers the sendRemoteTouch function as per the tutorial video).

2. The customer watches the product video, it finishes and the main timeline resumes as expected.

[Issue] The customer's session has automatically expired (unbeknownst to them) and tries to click another video. The UI doesn't respond. In this situation, the user is expected to scan a new QR code to start another RT session. By this stage, they have lost interest/have not realised this and walked away.

Alternatively, we could set our timelines to manual resume:
1. As before, the customer scans the QR code and activates our 'welcome screen' – a custom web page loads with our buttons, etc.

2. The customer watches the product video, enjoys it but walks away from the screen (note: the timeline is set to manually resume).

[Issue] The screen is 'locked in' its RemoteTouch state. As we're relying on the user to manually trigger the 'Resume Presentation' event, this scenario has frequently occurred in real life testing.

[Potential fix/solution] To supplement the auto resume/manual resume option – how about a the ability to select a timeline to resume to – e.g. go back to our welcome message. This would allow us to give feedback to the user (select another video) and by setting Auto Resume on this timeline, we could effectively create our own 'time out' by setting the timeline duration.

[Interim workaround] I'm extending each timeline beyond the desired length (by 1 minute) and using a Common Channel (so I don't have to duplicate content) to display a consistent 'Select another video' message. Each timeline will auto-resume. By doing this I've effectively added a window of opportunity for the user to retain control of the screen. Not ideal, but it works.

Other experiences/issues we've encountered.

[1] The user returns to a store and fires up their (previously used) RemoteTouch web page (in most QR code apps you can see previously used codes, so this will happen in some cases). The RemoteTouch web page loads – but for the consumer – it just doesn't work. There's currently no way (from an implementation standpoint) for us to check/authenticate a users RemoteTouch session and send them feedback. Having a simple Success/Fail check for the on page load would allow us to build a better customer experience.

[2] When using Manual Resume, is there a session/timeout length for RemoteTouch? In theory, will a user be able to control the screen for as long as they desire, until they click 'exit' on their web page. If someone walks away without exiting – would the screen in theory be 'locked in' its RemoteTouch state?

[3] I'm trying to find a use-case for manual resume (happy to hear from anyone using this) – it appears to rely too much on the customer triggering 'Resume Presentation' (but from experience to date, they will no doubt walk away/close their browser etc without doing so).

Keep up the great development, there's much potential.
