Google Cal XML Feed
« on: November 28, 2010, 08:51:37 AM »
All...  I am having trouble getting this RSS feed via xml to work in the SignageStudio.  Any ideas?  Here is the URL that I am working with and it's a calendar feed from our church.  Please help with any instructions you may have.

Google calendar's XML feed is NOT RSS 2.0 compliant. Google is using "Atom" instead of RSS 2.0.
What that means is; you cannot use the XML feed from Google calendar without first converting it to RSS 2.0.

I had this same problem when trying to use it in a campaign.

get a program or write a program to convert it & you will be fine.

We did custom develop a Google Calendar SWF.
We will soon make it available on the Shared Scenes.
If you want a copy of the swf, do you can display your Google Calendar data in a presentation, email us and we will provide it to you.

Regards.

Has the Google Cal Swf been released yet?  If so, where can I find it?

Google Calendar can be download here:
http://mediasignage.com/files/google_calendar_swf.zip

Be sure to use Desktop version, be sure to mark resource as ?Trust this content? and be sure to make your Google Calandar public and copy / paste its URL to the URL property of  the swf

StarVue,

I am new to using this software, and RSS feeds in general.  Do you have any recommendations on how to convert the Google Calendar xml to a RSS 2.0 compliant feed.  I am looking to create a scrolling feed of calendar items that are being pulled from my Google Calendar.

Thanks
Rob Morley

@ Rob
This is not my method, but I found this tool online, give it  try!
http://devtacular.com/utilities/atomtorss/

copy your entire Google XML link & insert it in the "Atom Feed URL" area.
when you click convert & your shown the page with your feed, copy that entire URL & use it in the RSS component of the Signage Studio.

I'm thinking about making a "Online Transcoder" for a minimal fee to do this ATOM to RSS service.
It can get complicated; as example I have one client that uses this at a hotel to show upcoming events, date & location of the room the event is in, however they do NOT want the description shown as they use that area of the Google Calendar for their internal notes for the event.  So we convert the ATOM feed then parse the RSS info to only show what we want and how we want it to be displayed, we even include page breaks(spaces) where needed.

I think using Google Cal is a great way of allowing the client an EASY way of updating their info without ever seeing/using the Signage Studio.

-=Let me know if anyone would be interested in a "CUSTOMIZABLE TRANSCODER" for Google Cal's ATOM to RSS.=-
