Who else is having problems with World Weather?
« on: June 13, 2018, 12:03:21 AM »
World Weather is a disaster!  Nothing works.  It's impossible to size and place JSON items properly - the size of the JSON item does not correlate with the actual size of the object displaying.  When is this going to get fixed?  Support tells me it's an API issue with your weather provider.  Tell us more so we don't waste time trying to get things to work in Studio on component items that are broken.

Hello
This is the first time I hear of any issues with Weather!
Is this something new that you are experiencing?
Can you please shared a video of your issues so we can investigate and get fixed ASAP?

regards

First the Weather Item component was suddenly discontinued and we're later told that it's a problem with the API from your weather provider.  Then, we get something called World Weather that uses JSON items.  That's fine if they were user-friendly to use but they are not.  Just try to correctly size and place them in a scene.  It's virtually impossible.  The size of the JSON item on the scene canvas does not at all correlate with the size they actually display at in a preview.

In order to get this:  http://www.screencast.com/t/xIJ8mCcm

...you have to contend with this:  http://www.screencast.com/t/GSnYBmgHD

So, my question is are we going to get improvements to the JSON items and how they display on a scene canvas vs. how they actually display on a preview or screen?  Also, will we be getting back the Weather Item that was at least more user-friendly?

Thanks.

uniformly, all JSON items show their field names while on scene stage so what you see are the fields coming from the weather api.  note that the fonts you specify is the font you will actually see.  to aid with your layout, you can select the JSON Item and in its Properties | Definition, set the field path to an actual value such as shown in this screencap https://www.screencast.com/t/DM2uQWrlpm - after you are done with your layout, you can then go to Properties | Component to set it to the proper field.

as for getting back the Weather Player/Item, we will be dropping this completely in future iterations.  from the developmental perspective, it is more difficult to maintain both the older component and the new component as the older component is using old coding standard with limited possibility from improvement while the new component has wide berth for improvement - that said, we will ask our devs to find other ways to aid users without resorting to above workaround.

Thanks, Admin.  Your explanation is much appreciated.  Maybe we can eventually get animated icons like in the old "weather item?"

the reason we removed the animated weather is since we moved to 100% GPU processing in 6.0 and the animated icons restricted the GPU layering.

The animated icons really added to a sense of professionalism and certainly looked much better than static, lifeless icons.  Is there any way to incorporate animated icons that don't impede the GPU?

moving forward, there will no longer be Weather Item - the icons used there are SWF-based and we are moving towards dropping SWF altogether

best regards
