Android on a Stick as a player?

Howdy,

Does anyone use one of those little Android boxes that plug directly into your TV along with the signageplayer app?  We have some TVs that have the Intel Compute Sticks connected but had one fail.  Since the Android stick things are much cheaper, and there appears to be a digital signage app, I thought maybe we'd give that a try.

Also, the only thing we really use this for is to play a slideshow.  We have images that stay for 8 seconds and go to the next one.  No fancy videos or other things.

We have used Android sticks. They do work as long they have enough RAM, good CPU and wifi reception.

We have always had to use automated digital timers to switch off the Android sticks. For example, the previous models do work for 2-3 days straight, but eventually the sticks can get stuck and not respond. Or, the Wifi connection drops suddenly after 48h of use. Many suppliers still use Android 4.2.2 version and everybody seems to have different ROM installed to the system. Some versions cannot be connected to the Google Play to get the automated updates. All kinds of funky stuff can happen, just to let you know.

I don't know the current state of the sticks, how good they work or has there been any major updates. As for the shutdown, I don't think it is even possible to shut the system down like Intel NUC player. You can boot the system, if the Android is rooted. But this boot is not same as power off.

Yeah, the price is lower than the normal Windows player.

For a simple slideshow these Android sticks do work.

yes unless you can use HDMI spliters and run multiple cables
