Windows XPe

The company i work for is considering buying a display with a built in computer (Samsung 320MXN-2). the computer runs XPe and i dont know a whole lot about it other then the basics.

I inderstand XPe is an image that loads and runs. I understand i can't install applications like i would on XP. So here are my questions.


1) what would i use to install/edit windows XPe?
2) How would i load the player on an XPe image?
3) If an updated player was released would i be able to push the update to an XPe system via the studio?

Hello,
You are right, XPe is a not your standard installation but rather you build a special image.

1. For XPe when can email you the requirement. If your vendor already has it pre-installed, it will most likely NOT work since you need special services installed which are not on by default on XPe.

2. IF the XPe is compatible (meaning that all required services were added), you can do a standard installation of our AIRPlayer, and need to modify the registry for the auto-startup of the SignageController.

3. Yes, you would.

how would one load the image onto the device? does MS have a XPe loading application? i've looked on the web but don't see much on XPe. please e-mail what documentation you have and if you can suggest a way to speed up the image installs as I will have to do over 100 of these.

I have the same problem in windows XPe.

XPe has a special writes protecting filter enabled, at least on these Samsung LCD-s.
It means, that for user, it seems like he/she successfully installed something, but after machine restart original state is back. That is one of the strong arguments of XPe, that it does not get corrupt over time or infested by viruses.

This write filter has to be disabled through command line before installing something and after that enabling again.
But this means also, that Signage Player, on every reboot, will start loading info from server all over again, because previous state is flushed.

I have been doing some testing with the Samsung 400CXn-2 with the built-in XPe embedded PC. I have gotten it to work with MediaSignage for the most part.

When using with MediaSignage, I'm still working on these issues:
1.) The screen boots to Windows XPe, then starts the AirPlayer, controller, etc. The Blackbox units have a boot screen and go black for the programs to start in the background. I'm not sure how to make the Samsung do this yet.
2.) The controls to shut down the monitor on a schedule via MediaSignage Station menu do not work. The Monitor does not go blank. It shows a screen saver type of text box that displays the Samsung media player program name.
3.) The unit only has 3GB of flash RAM. It has 3 usb ports, so you can use external storage, but MediaSignage dos not have an easy way to store the campaigns in a different location.

I will add more as I continue testing. It might be a good idea later to add a Forum folder for 3rd party hardware vendor discussions.

Can you please email us the instruction for installing the player on XPE machines. We are currently testing it. Also anyone has any experience with largescale deployment of the mediasignage software on XPE machines?
