MEDIASERVER on virtual machine in VMware environment
« on: October 13, 2015, 10:12:11 AM »
Hello guys,

I have a customer which would like to have the MediaServer installed on a VM which runs on VMware environment. The main problem is the
USB-hardware protector without which the solution wouldn't work. The virtual machine has to detect at the whole time the USB device otherwise the operators will not be able to upload and manage content. So the goal is to map the physical USB interface of a server to the virtual deivce of the VM. Do you have any suggestions how we can achieve that goal?

I got suggestion from one of my colleagues to use this device:

http://www.pcm.com/p/SEH-Technology-Security-Appliances/product~dpno~8208117~pdp.gcdfagc

Can you please advice if this is a good idea? Normally this device is working just fine on Vmware environment with other USB devices
but we have't tested it with the USB protector from MediaSignage.

Thank you in advance!

Regards

Hi,

thank you very much!

I checked it is compatible with the Vmware hypervisor (at least on paper).

I will check the device and hopefully everything will be ok!

Hi,

Is it possible to use the following product:

http://www.digi.com/products/models/aw-usb-2-w

We don't need more than 1 USB port.

What is your opinion?

Thank you in advance!

We have the same issue: DoD requirements prohibit use of USB dongles. Since all of our virtual machines are 2012 we are unable to implement the already purchased system. Also, we can't use the cloud version since all of our stuff has to reside within our network.

New releases of MediaServer should be without dongles - after all a dongle an outdated security solution.

The question is when will the new generation of MediaServer be available and will it be more in line with current security trends?

Would you be able to install this in a Gov issued AWS instance?
if so, we can possibly set that up without a dongle
for reference see:  https://aws.amazon.com/govcloud-us/
