Potential NEW Media Player?
« on: January 12, 2015, 06:39:30 AM »
I came across this just the other day.  It's apparently going to be available by the end of Q1-2015 and will sell for $150.  This could be a fantastic addition to inexpensive hardware offerings that don't use Android.

My worry is that it might use windows8RT not the full version.

It uses Windows 8.1 with bing. There already is another Intel stick released (in cooperation with Intel) with the same specifications. Windows 8.1 with bing gives OEMs the possibility to use Windows at no costs. The stick will be released with Internet Explorer with bing on it. Ofcourse as a user you are able to uninstall explorer and use Chrome for example, but OEMs are not allowed to do that (they are allowed to do that with the normal Windows, which also ships with bing).

This makes a full Windows available, which makes it possible to load Chrome as external HTML plugin, instead of the Adobe AIR plugin (something many users would love, according to the forum topics). Theoretical it should even be possible to use live TV on this stick, although I think this will be to CPU intensive.

I for one, am seriously considering these devices, because I really don't like the Android player as it is right now. It's just not stable and waaaaaaay to buggy to be an Enterprise solution (more something for hobbyists). Besides, Windows offers more possibilities like RDM.

I am wondering what kind of BIOS / UEFI this stick has. But, as with the Android sticks, I believe that around the start of Q3 there will be loads of these sticks available.

Has anyone tried the Intel Compute Stick as a player?  It is now widely available but I'm not seeing anything around here about it (unless I totally missed the posts in my search just now)

Got one today, not as impressed as I thought I might be. Still playing with it, video isn't too friendly with atom processor there seems to be a lot of jumping.

I am a new user of Digital Signage and have been trying out android sticks for the players
I was building campaigns with up to 20 short ideas and images. i found the android stick very unstable and playback of the campaign resulted in black screen delays between assets and timelines
I have now tried the Intel stick and right from installation found it much more stable and no black screens. Continuing to test but looks promising as a player solution

I am glad you like the Intel stick.
In our tests the performance was just as good as our mediaDROIDX, and so I do recommend you order the mediaDROIDX as you will save some $$$

I ran the stick straight out of the box - did not make any modifications
I will talk to some of my technical colleagues to see if it is worth trying to optimise the installation
For me the fact that it moved between videos and timelines without a 2/3 second black screen makes it a winner over the android solution.
For European users the current exchange rate and the delivery costs for the mediadroidX makes the Intel option price competitive.

I have been testing Intel Compute Stick. Speed is ok, form factor is great. Only problem is Windows 8.1 with Bing.
Monitor goes to sleep after some time "of no activity". All the help i found from google is for normal Win 8.1.
Bing version does not have group policies etc.
I'm considering upgrade to windows 10.

I have not used the compute stick, but i have used it on tablet .. Yes the group policies wont work so could not wake up from the sleep mode automatically and hence have to shut down and start manually. But the power saving mode is same as the regular windows.

I've been testing with the newly released model and it's is performing much better than the first gen. version. New version comes with Win10 installed.

Hi
We've tested at least 3 different sticks (both win8.1 and 10).
All of them have the same problem: lack of Daily Wake Up option in BIOS.
Performance is smooth ( in our opinion).
