Images with low quality before transition begins
« on: August 02, 2014, 11:33:05 AM »
Hello!

I'm testing "Transitions" on Android (4.1.1), I am using the latest version of the Player, the Studio and AdobeAIR.

The transitions work perfectly without lag.

But I realized that before the transition begins, regardless of whether the transition is an image or CustomRSS, all the "Scene" gets a bad quality.

It seems that the "PLAYER" makes a low quality screenshoot of the current image before making the transition effect.
Is possible to do this "screenshoot" have better quality?

To make it noticeable this loss of quality before the transition ...

Thank you.  :)

I checked and noticed that this problem occurs on other platforms too. (Windows 7, last version of Studio)...

The test I'm doing is putting the transition only as FADE 2D without movement.

The picture is a bit blurred before starting the transition.

I've reproduced this issue on Android and Windows.

Hi! :)
Thank you very much!

You could solve the problem? Or is the problem in the Player?

Thanks a lot! :)

I have also reproduced this problem..

I have spoken to Stein in their chat system and he has also reproduced the problem (see transcript). He has escalated this to the dev team, who hopefully can do a fix for it - possibly for the new standalone verion. It's very noticeable on very large screens.. and doesn't look good at all - resulting in me not using the transition effects.

Quote
07:24 Stein S: so you are testing this on a windows player then right?
07:24 Blackfox: Yes
07:26 Stein S: i think this is happening because the images are too big in file size
07:26 Stein S: at full screen, 1920x1080 = 2 megapixels
07:27 Blackfox: hmm... i wasnt aware this would be a problem...
07:27 Stein S: with jpeg your file size with full quality should be 1mb below
07:27 Stein S: i think reducing the file size will improve this
07:28 Blackfox: but surely the system could cope with a 3mb file.. seems strange why it couldnt
07:28 Stein S: ill test this first on a player
07:28 Blackfox: OK
07:28 Blackfox: the images are saved in photoshop, as JPG max.
07:32 Stein S: hmm i do see it
07:32 Stein S: although it's not very noticeable in my station because my test station has a small screen
07:32 Stein S: but i kinda see that it changes in quality for about a second
07:32 Blackfox: ok.. well this is a very very large display..
07:33 Stein S: i think it has to do with the transition, that it loads like a lower resolution for the transition
07:33 Blackfox: Yeah, exactly.
07:35 Stein S: there really isn't a way to change this behavior unfortunately
07:35 Stein S: i would suggest to reduce the file size to make this less apparent
07:35 Blackfox: hmm, ok.. maybe this is a bug, i mean, for expected behaviour it isn't really good..
07:36 Blackfox: could it be changed in the new version of the player? the standalone one?
07:38 Stein S: ill send a suggestion to the development team

Bump.
I have stopped using transitions because of this issue, and because of generally buggy behavior of the transitions.

I know this is a very old post, but in case people are searching for it:

My assumption is the player is creating a bitmap of the 2 items being displayed and using them for the transition. It is much easier on the system to transition between 2 bitmaps than to transition between 2 items that may have multiple layers to them. That is why you see it change just before and just after the transition.

Development Team: I am wondering if the smoothing parameter of creating the bitmap has not been set to "true". If it has, maybe using the drawWithQuality() function would give better results than just the draw() function. At least with the former, you can set the quality level as well as the smoothing level.

Of course, when v6.0 comes out, I believe everything will be on the Starling platform, so they may have taken the smoothing into consideration.
