Digital Internal Communication
« on: May 08, 2014, 10:44:31 PM »
After exhausting my google-ing skills for today, I'm reaching out to this collective for some ideas...  Please don't hesitate to fire away... Looking to deploy solution to 5-10 small screens (15" vertical mount LCD?).  Chief content will be word docs (convert to pdf?) that are currently printed, tacked to bulletin board, edited and thrown out as needed for busy seasonal banquet operations.  Would like to allow for a couple images / jpegs / whatever for company logo, employee of the month, etc.

Limited technical knowledge among our content creators and uploaders (I'm comfortable within mediasignage, have 5+ yrs experience now), however I need to keep end-user operation as simple as "... Save As > network folder ", then have folder contents displayed on screen in slideshow format.  ideally like to have ability to use touch interface to swipe between content (word doc - banquet event orders).  Multiple kitchens with multiple dining rooms and multiple back-of-house areas, sometimes as many as 10 BEOs posted at a time, many times 1-2 at a time.  Can't wrap my head around a fairly simple PDF export to folder with slideshow like display.....this is where i'm stuck...

Thanks in advance for anything,
-k

Ever thought about a flash file programmed to do all this? Sliding -> loading files from external (internal) server. That way you only have to put this flash file in the signage software and never change anything anymore. I MS should support doing this with flash (read it on the forums), but I have to admit to have never tried it myself.

My flash skills are novice at best, but I'll take a look.  You're right on with the simplicity, I'm looking for something that will show all pdf files in a "container" / folder, since I won't be able to constantly update with new item file names.  Pretty sure the creators/uploaders will be able to maintain contents in a folder...
Thanks for the idea.

Update:  current standby solution is to use a few old WinXP boxes with old elo touchscreens (disable domain outside local) .  boot to appropriate network folder, office staff then dumps pdfs into and is in charge of "managing" the network folders.  simplify winxp ui to make as easy as possible (esp using touch interface only), as kitchen and waitstaff will need to easily access information based on need.  quick time-out on screensaver, which has picture folder mapped to network folder which HR can input jpegs of company / hr type memo stuff (easily taught how to use free converter software).

this seems ghetto but accomplishes some basic internal communication, no?
thoughts anyone?...

i'd really like to incorporate mediasignage.com software as i'm a firm believer in its capabilities within menus and beyond, just need some help from ya'll as i'm new to this type of deployment.
