Hi,
Here is the rundown of our machine, player app, and campaign specs and the issue we are facing. Your feedback, insights, and shared experiences are much appreciated.

We are running:
Machine Specs:
  • Quad core, 2GB DDR3, 8GB Storage Android sticks
  • Android version 4.2.2
  • Signage Player APK version 4.15.19

Campaign Specs:
  • Division #1: Sequences of three images
  • Division #2: HTML Component displaying website containing an auto refreshing DIV for updated content. (We have tried the HTML component with fully static webpages too and the results are the same.)
  • Division #3: Sequence of three more images

The Issue we are facing:
Our players are restarting/crashing every few hours. They don't make it through an entire day without restarting and we do not know what is causing this. We can successfully run other campaigns consisting of photos and videos with zero restarts. So we are hypothesizing that the HTML component is the culprit. Can anyone shed light onto this?

We have a few questions about the HTML component:
  • Is the HTML Component somehow resource heavy?
  • Is the webkit browser finicky about handling certain types of HTML, JScript, PHP, or Ajax?

Thank you for your help in figuring this out.

I am wondering if the wifi card is heating up the stick. Since it is not happening right away, it sounds like it may overheating so the stick just shuts down to cool itself. If you can try to use an external wifi card (USB) and see if you run into the same issue or not. The reason it would not over heat with the static images would be that the resources are on the stick so the wifi card is not being used then. It's just a theory.

there is an open bug against Adobe AIR with CSS that uses embedded fonts.
try and see if you can disable and CSS fonts styling (possibly embedded) and see if solves the issue.

@Criley We'll explore this.

@Admin Wow that's a pretty big bug. So are other users reporting HTML Component issues frequently as well because of this? We'll strip all font related CSS and see what happens then report back.

only for embedded fonts which are not used very often in CSS

OK, well no embedded fonts in use here. Something else in my code is potentially causing the problem.

Have you had the chance to test the heating issue I mentioned. I would think if it was a CSS or programming issue, it would happen to all units or at least immediately, not after a few hours. I think the time issue is allowing the device to warm up and possibly overheat from the wifi card.

Now you say the players are restarting. Are we talking about the stick is rebooting or is the signageplayer app restarting. I am also assuming that it is not the same time everyday.
