HTML5 Secure Server for OFFLINE playback
« on: September 18, 2013, 09:29:21 AM »
Hi,
we are working on creating an advertising platform with touch capabilities.
HTML5 is a great tool for content creation, that also allows google analytic and other neat stuff that was previously unavailable or too expensive.
Here is what I would like to see (keep in mind i am not very techie):
- a way to point the signage player to a secured web server where HTML5 content is hosted for upload.
- a web server on the the "player's" hardware, that would be able to cache the content and display it even in offline mode
- this web server to be able to store input data: such as touch points, forms, coupon distribution etc.
- some ping action to check and see if there is updated/different content to be distributed to the players
- some kind of way to resume looped content after a viewer has finished interacting with the presented content.
It is my understanding that something like this already exists with myopensign screener, but they are not willing to sell just the software. The explanation is that software is embedded into their hardware, which doesn't make any sense to me, it is probably just a plot to sell their hardware, which in my opinion is outdated and overpriced for what it is.

What are your takes on this guys? Is there any possibility to see this in the future? Is there another way around this?

I have seen opensign it is not very flexible and they have standard screen templates ; as you said the hardware is expensive.
Even Mediasignage application on android works best only with Mediasignage baked android, on any other device there are issues.
Even on Ipad the app doesnt work properly.
As you said if Mediasignage can enable html5 content to be downloaded then that should be of great help.
I wish we could start using Signage player with touch capabilities using low cost tablets it would be of great help.

I agree.  HTML 5 really is impressive for animation and motion graphics.  To be able to cache HTML 5 content for offline playback would be awesome!

We do fully support HTML5, in fact in Android we use the native web browser of the device to display HTML, and so anything your device supports as far as HTML5, will run exactly in the same manner in the presentation.
And, as a quick teaser, we will be releasing a new SignagePlayer HTML5 SDK as well (in the works).

HTML5 mode works offline actually. It also able to stream Audio and Video files stored in the server machine, from the client machine using a browser.
