Naming of the AirPlayer auto-launch utility or WatchDog
« on: July 19, 2009, 02:02:13 PM »
I gotta admit, when i first installed the airPlayer and this program called 'watchDog' was getting installed too, all my alarms went off.

While I may understand that the 'watchDog' utility simply periodically 'pings' the Player to check its status, and if its not running, to relaunch it.

Others are most definitely not going to understand this; and the others i refer to are my potential customers.

NO ONE wants a 'watchdog' program installed onto their computer. Period.

So it makes it all the more frustrating when I have to explain that its not a watchdog in the sense that most interpret it to be, when it could soo easily be avoided by renaming it to something more application specific.

How about: PlayerAutoLaunch, ChannelWatch, PlayerGuardian or anything that better identifies the utility with what it actually does.
'WatchDog' could be any general utility, and as such, is interpreted to be an activity watchdog monitor.  Not Good.

Thanks for the feedback.
What if we call it, AIRPlayer Watchdog.
How do you feel about that ?

ok....tongue-in-cheek now...

What if we call it "Not a Watchdog"...or..."The Super Nicey Nice WatchDog"

In the U.S., 'watchdog' is in itself a punitive word.
It threatens punitive measures.
I dont care what face you put on it...its still going to bite you!

Let me ask you...whose interest is being served here?
Yours or your clients, because the answer better be...thats right, your clients.

My clients dont like it, dont want it, and I cant tell you how many administrators take pause during install when a SECOND application called WATCHDOG is auto-installing!

again, my 2 cents humbly submitted.

MAW31 is correct, "Watchdog" is a punitive word in the U.S.

Thanks MediaSignage for changing it to "Signage Controller". It's nice to see a company that is responsive to it's customers requests, and in-turn their customers.
