Caching content for future playout
« on: December 21, 2012, 01:25:32 PM »
I understand the the latest Signage Player caches only content that is in use on a timeline to ready its use, but here is a scenario that appears to not work properly.  Can someone please shed light on this subject:

I want a 45 second FLV video to begin playing exactly at midnight on January 1st to welcome in the New Year.  The video is scheduled to play at that time.  Since it's in the future for play out, is it still cached and ready to go without downloading or if the Internet connection happens to be down or slow?

Thanks!

I know what you mean but here is work around.
2 ways of doing this.
Option 1
1. Create test campaign with all resources that you will be playing on 1st Jan.
2. Play that campaign now on that player so it caches that file/s.
make sure all files have been cached
3. Set campaign to scheduler mode as you intended for midnight 1st January.
this will play them files without having to download or possible delays.

Option 2
Time Travel
You could adjust clocks on that player and play to test & then put clock back.
Should work without internet connection.

if there are more then 1 players then you will have to do same to each 1

I was going to suggest the same, but have the timeline play in the middle of the night when the venue is closed. This way if the player is already installed at the location, you could build it and run it when no one is around to know.

Is there any way to add a feature that tells you if an content item is cached and ready to play as well as maybe a button that forces an item to cache before it plays?  That would eliminate this workaround in cases where content is scheduled for future playout?

Thanks!

This feature will be nice.

Why have some screens that are connected 24 hours a day, and people watching 24 hours a day, so that the GRAFIXMEDIA suggestion does not work very well.

That would be nice. I am wondering if you are not using sound, you might be able to add the content to a screen division that is under the bottom most screen division so it is not visible and this may cache it. Just a thought.

I'm not using sound, image only, the idea of criley is very good.  ;D

But it would be ideal to have this functionality by default, which does not seem very complicated to do.

Great call Criley

I have been doing this work around since cache was dropped and works great.

If there are video files with sound make sure to mute them before play.

FLV format does not need caching before play and will play on the fly so there is 0 delay as long as internet is available.

Zone doesn't have to be big it can be really small 50x50 in the background.
