[Win7] PROBLEM: SignagePlayer restarts every 1-1.5h
« on: April 25, 2011, 11:37:03 PM »
Greetings,
I've been experiencing a serious issue on one of my recently tested players - on freshly installed Win7 Home Premium, the SignagePlayer app seems to be restarting itself every (approx.) 1-1.5h. Since I'm out of ideas for a possible reason for such an issue, it'd be much appreciated if the MediaSignage staff could help me out with that one.

Best regards!

What kind of processor are you using? we this this kind of behavior if:

1. You are using a slow processor such as the ATOM family of processors
2. You are using a swf that leaks memory
3. You have set the reboot conditions in the SignageStudio > Players to low value

Always glad to help,

Hi again, thanks for such a quick reply!

1. Yes, I am using Atoms on all my players, but problem appears only on Win7-based machines. I've been thoroughly analyzing the stress of the CPU in both 720p and 1080p signage campaigns - its usage never exceeded 30-40% (at the moment I'm mostly using the dual-core D520 model) so I think we're pretty safe to assume that it is not the CPU issue.

2. I'm basing on H.264 video spots on my campaigns (and a few "widgets" from SignageStudio, such as Weather, RSS and HTML embed), but also have only one personally-made swf - a short, looping bitmap animation. How can I check if any of my campaign's elements are making a memory leak?

3. I've set it to 1.5 Giga while having 2.0 Giga - should I set it to a higher value?

Best regards!

The ATOM is  known to cause racing conditions where the CPU will process 1-2-3-5-4 due to lack of processing power in specific areas... win7 will cause it as the OS is more resource intensive. I am sure that if you use the mediaBOX you will not run into this issue...

At the very moment, three of my players are based on the Atom D520 architecture. I can't switch them for anything else, so I have to solve the issue I'm encountering. I've checked the memory peak/player reset relation - it doesn't affect the restarting process. The CPU usage doesn't cross the 50% barrier in the moment of the restart too. The question is if somekind of a safety system is responsible for automatic restarts or is is something else. If it's "triggerable", I'm willing to turn it off and take the risk of damaging the device, for the sake of testing and, if possible, solving the problem.

Having all above in mind, I'd be extremely grateful for any help in this matter from the administration team.

Unfortunately there is nothing I can recommend, besides keeping the presentation to a bare minumum
